5Perfect supplement for me.Nov 28, 2010
By Jean "msanjelpie"
I'm a girl in my 40s. So why am I takinga multivitamin for 50+men? Well, reading the ingredients of a dozen different formulas on the market, this one had more of the things I wanted, and less of the things I didn't. The best thing is that it doesn't have iron. I don't want iron which is why I take multi vitamins for older folks. I do have to take this pill with food or I get nauseaus, but the nausea is a lot less than many other multi vitamins on the market.

As far as the ginkgo goes... "It is normally not recommended to take ginkgo and ibuprofen together. The reason is that ginkgo has the anti-blood clotting activity and ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) may increase bleeding. Potentially they may act on top of each other to increase the chance of bleeding."

Ginkgo biloba acts as a blood thinner by inhibiting platelets from clumping together, so it could be unsafe for patients who are taking aspirin or other blood thinners...

I would suggest not taking the multi-vitamin a week before scheduled surgery...

1Irresponsible "improvement" to a great productJun 02, 2009

For seven years, I took One-A-Day's original 50+ product, which was the best multi out there. But then the MARKETING geniuses at One-a-Day maker Bayer split the line into separate Women's and Men's 50+ "Advantage" versions.

For men the product is largely the same as before, but with the addition of Lycopene -- which is fine...and Ginkgo Biloba -- WHICH IS IRRESPONSIBLE!

Never mind that evidence for Ginkgo's effectiveness for memory-enhancement is very weak. The REAL problem is that Ginkgo is a fairly potent BLOOD THINNER! What on earth is the maker of Bayer Aspirin -- taken daily in mini-size tablets by a large proportion of men 50+ (myself included) for its blood thinning properties -- doing adding a blood-thinning ingredient to their Men's 50+ Vitamin??!! Clearly just looking for a marketing gimmick vs. Centrum Silver at the potential expense of health!

The standard cautions on the label of course contain the required warning to talk to your doctor if you are taking blood thinners (although without any hint as to the fact that the warning is related to the Ginkgo "advantage"). But you that know many, if not most, of the high proportion of 50+ men taking daily aspirin (or even a more-potent prescription blood-thinner like coumadin) aren't going to read and heed that. They're not going to worry that a multivitamin, from a "trusted" name, could have any significant "watchouts" lurking. Meanwhile, by using this product they could very well be increasing their risk of dangerous excessive bleeding due to the increase in blood thinning. This can be potentially deadly for someone at risk of, say, a hemorrhagic stroke.

Shame on Bayer and One-a-day for ruining a great product -- and in a shockingly irresponsible way!

1This supplement made me nauseous and gave me hot flashes like I was on menopause!Feb 14, 2012
By Mark Twain "Real Name"
I am from the other side of the pond, Africa and contrary to what you see in the media, it is not synonymous with poverty and no I am not related to a powerful but corrupt political leader. By comparison to the life in the west, my people are the salt of the earth living in humble circumstances so no healthcare or insurance. My father is a tried, tested, and proven athlete. My mother, an athlete as well, her side of the family is comprised of big able bodied men and women who rely on physical labour for their livelihood. Our backyard (everyone in rural Africa has one and no title deed involved) has an orchard and we maintain a garden with/for daily greens, this coupled with seasonal agricultural produce and livestock is our source of daily food and therefore essential food groups.

Coming to the west, I drank the cool-aid, got busy and bought into supplements. I have reverted back to fresh produce and buy "organic" when I can even though it means hunting down farmer's markets. I am an active person and have never felt livelier physically and mentally! New old me!

Though in Africa our life span is low, my mothers' side of the family eclipses the norm. Grandma lived over 100 to give an extreme example, mother will be 70 soon.

I may have inherited not only good genes by default, but a healthy lifestyle out of necessity, but from my humble experience with both sides coin i.e daily vitamin supplements vs daily food sources of vitamins, as a consumer and not a doc, NOTHING can substituted for organic agricultural produce and good exercise for both your physical and mental being. The price tag for organic food produce can be deterring but a doctor's bill coupled with time lost due to recovery from discomforting illnesses is worse.
