Compact, low cost, easy to travel, organized and completeDec 16, 2011
By Online Junkie I was recently diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic or pre-diabetic and this is my first meter. My mom is a Type II and her old meter is much bigger than this small kit. It took me a few tries to figure this system out. Here's a few tips that I hope will help you. 1). Get everything ready to go or it might time out and you've wasted a strip. 2). If you are a newbie like me, after you insert the strip, keep adding blood until you hear the beep. The exposed strip will measure the sample with the strip in place, do not remove the strip while it is testing... if you do, it will render the strip useless as they cannot be reused. 3). I found that I can just leave the meter secured in the case and just insert the strips while it remains in the case 4). The meter kit includes a bottle of control solution, 10 strips and 10 lancets. So, order your additional lancets and strips at the same time as your kit
It is a surprisingly compact and complete kit so if you travel, you'll really love it. It includes a zippered travel case which is a little bigger than a deck of cards. It even has a velcro belt loop and a external pocket... Not sure I'd ever attach this meter to my belt, but maybe find use attaching to my bicycle or daypack. I'm too new to know reasons why I'd attach this kit to something, but it is there for those who know.
Yes, the kit is a outstanding bargain... but it's the old razor refill business model... The kit is cheap but the maker makes their money off the test strips. So, I purchased this kit based on the fact that the supplies were the lowest cost per usage that I could find. It happens to be well designed, compact, lightweight and includes a nice travel/storage case are all bonuses for me. I can definitely recommend this item to others.
This model appears to be their latest model (Freestyle Freedom Lite) and it's only around $5 bucks cheaper than the Freestyle Lite. I gather the Freestyle Lite has a lighted display as well as being able to download data to your computer, but you will need an optional cable and software ($50+) but the reviews were many complaining the software didn't work (w/Vista 64) or the cable was very expensive, so I opted for this unit instead. I would have liked those extra features however. There is a 2.5mm input jack but the manual doesn't mention any data download ability, software or cable, so I don't know if the interface is live or if this unit can be used with the software program.
